QuestionThreading a Bobbin?!
I recently inherited a Brother VX780 and I am a beginner when it comes to sewing. As the model is older, no instruction manual came with the machine. Could you please instruct me in layman's terms on how to thread the bobbin? Thank you for your assistance.

AnswerDear Cali,

I strongly suggest that you get a manual for the bobbin winding and other pertinent functions on the machine. Picture form in the manual is the best way to learn this. Part # IBVX780 is available for $20.95 on www.sewingandvac.com

QuestionWhat Are These "White Caps" For?
I have a Sears Kenmore 158.12270 that was given to me by my mother before she passed away she also gave me a box full of they look like white caps with different lines in them like zig zag lines. I dont know what they are or where they go. Could you help me.
Thank you.

AnswerThey are cams that incorporate different stitches. I would need to see a picture of the cams and the sewing machine to be able to instruct you on how to insert them into your machine.

QuestionNot Understanding How to Thread the Bobbin?
A recently acquired an old Singer 247. I don't understand how to thread the bobbin down below. I found a diagram on the web which says to drop the spool into the case ensuring the thread is counter-clockwise; then pull thread through notch A one way and notch B the other way. I can see the notches, but can't get the thread into the notches. It seems the spool sets to high in the case or something. Is there a special spool I should be using? Please help! Thank you. Stephanie

8/21/2006
AnswerDear Stephanie,

If it sets too high, then you have the wrong bobbin in your machine. Your machine takes part # 172222P bobbin on www.sewingandvac.com.

QuestionWon't Feed
Hello
I have borrowed a Viking 6430 from my sister, and have figured out how to thread it,. but the fabric does not seem to feed. Stitches look okay when I pull the fabric through, but the foot is not feeding, and te feeders under the plate don't seem to engage.

thank you for your help

7/25/2006
AnswerThere is a button in the front lower right hand corner that raises and lowers the feed. If it is pressed into the machine, the feed is lowered and it will not sew.

QuestionWinding the Bobbin
I have a Singer Touch tronic 2010. My bobbin wont wind and I dont have the manual to see if I'm doing it right or not. It seem sthe bobin is too big but I'm not sure. 1. Can you provide me with the bobbin # so I can get he right bobbin. ( I have the one for touch & sew) 2. Give me instructions to wind the bobbin
Thanks

7/24/2006
AnswerThe bobbin number is 181551 and is available on www.sewingandvac.com

The manual is part number SR-2010 and is also available on www.sewingandvac.com

Thread the machine as if you are starting to sew- presser foot in the up position, take the thread from the needle, wrap it around the screw that holds the presser foot onto the machine, open the bobbin case slide door, insert a fresh bobbin, and on the left hand side of the bobbin case there is a button with a bulls eye and/or an arrow, push that button down. Begin to start the machine. After about five seconds of running the machine, stop, unwrap the thread from the screw, and remove it from the machine and continue to run the machine. You will note that the bobbin is winding. When you have wound enough thread onto the bobbin, stop the machine, shut the bobbin case slide door, and begin to sew.

I do suggest that you have an instruction manual for just such purposes. There are many other "quirks" that can be explained through the manual. We have these available at www.sewingandvac.com for $16.95.

QuestionMontgomery Wards
Hi! I have this older model, heavy duty sort of sewing machine labeled montgomery ward sewing machine model UHT J1460

I got it at a garage sale for $50 including the old cabinet- and have gotten it to work. Do you know about when it would have been made- and how much it might be really worth? It didn't come with any paperwork or instructions and I have searched the web to find out how to use some of the attachments that came in a box.

Thanks so much for your time!

7/12/2006
AnswerMontgomery Wards never actually produced sewing machines- different manufacturers produced machines for them, which is why information on them is limited. There really is not a great demand for those machines.

QuestionMass Amounts of Thread!!!
I have a Singer 6106. I can't seem to put the bobbin in the machine correctly. Every time I think I get it right, the thread from the bobbin comes out in mass amounts. Can you help?

7/12/2006
AnswerYou are threading the top of the machine incorrectly. Just to make sure that what I'm saying is correct, use two color threads to sew with- and you will see that it is in fact the top thread that is bunching.

QuestionZig Zag on my 401A
I just bought a Singer 401A,but haven't been able to sew the zig zag,it has one cam inside the machine, and the knobs they turn but I just don't know how to make it se the zig zag ( I have a 15-88 and a 328K) and been sewing for quite some time
Any help will be very much appreciated.
Elva

7/12/2006
AnswerOpen up the top door on your machine and there will be a long list of
letters. It will say the zig zag is BL. Dial in the BL on the front two
round dials, and move the stitch width to a number larger than 0 and it will
zig zag. If it does not, that means that your machine is frozen. In that
case, you will need to get a hair dryer, open the lids and heat the inside
of the machine up until it frees up.

QuestionKenmore 117-720
Dear Sew Vac Doctor,
I bought a 1956 Sears Kenmore sewing machine at a Goodwill store and would like to know more about it. It came with the original bill of sale from the purchaser back in 1956. It is in a wooden cabinet, the top flips out to create an extended work area and the machine then flips out from inside the cabinet. The model number is 117-720. The cabinet is in perfect condition and the machine is a good condition considering the age but could use a tune-up and cleaning. Operates but I do not know how to thread it to use it. It also came with every attachment imaginable. My question is what is this worth and is there a manual available for this to instruct me how to thread and use it?

Thank you,
Debbie

You will have to contact Sears for that information. Sorry.

QuestionViking Cam Question-
Hi, I just got this machine for free and finally got a foot pedal for it. I have a manual ordered but I am eager to use the different stitches. I put the cams in the spot they are supposed to go and set the stitch selector and the width and link to the matching colors but it only sews straight. What am I doing wrong?
I appreciate your help.

Thanks,
Lisa
2/21/2006
AnswerDear Lisa,

It could be several things...
Take the fashion disk out of the back of the machine and look inside to find a silver metal cylinder that the cam rides on. Then you'll see a black plastic cam that is attached to the cylinder- that could be cracked. Inspect it. If it is cracked you will need to replace it with part # 4111595-0G for $32.50 on www.sewingandvac.com

QuestionHaving Trouble Embroidering Polyester
I have a Singer Futura CE-200 Embroidery machine. I am having problems embroidering a polyester double layer throw. These are the throws that have been out in the stores for a while for traveling or kids. Just a light weight throw. I was trying to embroider on them and my thread keeps breaking. I have moved up from a #9 needle to a #11 needle, thinking that was the problem. Why would the thread be breaking?

Jeri

2/16/2006
AnswerDear Jeri,

Does it break on any other material?

Sorry for the delay in responding. We were on vacation and failed to post the notice.

Thank You,
SewVac Doctor

RE:
No, just on the polyester throws. I used a tear away stabilizer behind it. I tried rethreading my needle several times and it still would break. A friend of mine said it was the throw material.

Jeri

RE:
Are you using a ball point needle? That is the only thing I can think of. Let me know.

Sorry for the delay in responding. We were on vacation and failed to post the notice.

RE:

I have another question for you. I have been thinking about purchasing a bigger machine, one that has more needles. What machine or machines would you suggest would be the best? Right now I could do embroidery projects for about 5 small businesses. Iím just planning on something that would do hats, jackets, shirts, etc.

Jeri

RE:
We would have to get you an industrial embroidery machine. Either a Renaissance or something similar. The total cost would be somewhere around $10,000.00. Let me know if you would be interested.

Thank You,
SewVac Doctor

RE:
Sorry, I should have went into more detail of what I was looking for. I was in a hurry. Anyway, I plan on doing this in my home as a sideline business. I currently have a machine that has 1 needle, but would like one that has 12 + needles. I am looking for a used or cheap machine. Not sure what a good brand would be.

Jeri

RE:
Dear Jeri,

A 12+ needle machine is going to be very expensive- whatever brand- and finding one used is virtually impossible. Sorry I couldn't be more help.

QuestionCan My Machine Quilt?
Dear SewDoctor...

For Christmas my dear husband bought me the basic Brother sewing machine from Wal-Mart, as I am a total rank beginner he was advised a basic machine was important for me to decide if I really liked it, could understand how to use it, etc...

I really do enjoy my little machine, I have made a pillow and some placemats, my question to you is, can this machine handle quilting? I am really interested in doing basic quilts, and eventually more advanced type quilts.

Are there any possible issues I should know about for this machine? Model number is LS-2125

Thanks so much

Robin in Michigan
2/10/2006
AnswerDear Robin,

Any machine with a straigth stitch can quilt. If your machine has a feed drop, it makes it much more convenient to free-hand quilt. If it does not, there should be a feed cover plate in the attachments. In short, yes your machine can do quilting and there is nothing in particular that you need to know about your machine to do so, however, to really get into quilting, you will need another machine.

Thank You,

QuestionDo I Have to Drop the Feed Dogs Manually?
Lucky me my husband bought the Singer SXL600 for Christmas from an advertisement by JoAnn Fabrics and I cannot locate a store that sells this machine or has an instructor on it. My question today is do I have to drop the feed dogs manually before embroidering. Sincerely Lorraine

2/8/2006
AnswerUnfortunately, that is too new a machine for me to be able to tell. I cannot even get any information on that machine through my Singer dealer. My suggestion to you is to take it back to JoAnn Fabrics and ask them to show you how to use it.

QuestionMy Machine Just Eats Fleece!
I just bought this machine as an upgrade from my Viking Huskystar 215. I was looking for a machine that offered twin-needle capacity. The dealer sold me this machine for $199 (telling me this machine retails for $499) but everywhere I've been looking online (as I've searched for an answer to my problem) the price is $199!! I feel like I've been snowed. Anyway - this is not why I'm writing.

Half of the things I sew are with fleece. I had no problem with this using the Huskystar, but with the Singer, it won't happen! The machine just eats the fabric. I've tried rethreading it, I've lengthened the stitch.... nothing helps. I called the dealer and he told me to rethread it, and if that doesn't work there's a presser foot that has feed dogs ON IT for $30 that would assist in feeding the fleece through properly. Geez - I'd rather not have to spend $30 more for a foot when I feel the machine should be able to handle this on it's own.

Sorry to ramble - guess I'm getting stuff off my chest, too.

Do you have any suggestions I haven't tried?

Also - for some reason you strike me as a "know all" about sewing machines. Do you know of a good computerized machine in the range of $200-$350 that you would recommend that offers twin-needle functioning?

Thanks for listening - and potentially for your assistance. :)

Sincerely,
Juanima

2/2/2006
AnswerDear Jaunima,

Unfortunately, the only advice that I have would be to purchase that $30.00 even feed foot. That will do the trick.

As for a computerized machine, your Singer is capable of doing anything that you want it to do- you just have know how to adjust the machine.

QuestionWinding a Bobbin
A donation of a Singer 600 was given to the non-profit I work for but there's no manual. For the life of me can not figure out how to wind the bobbin for this model. I'm assuming the bobbin should be wound as if I'm about to sew because there doesn't appear to be any other place the bobbin can fit. I would greatly appreciate your instruction for winding the bobbin.

Jerushia
2/1/2006
AnswerThread the machine as if you are starting to sew- presser foot in the up position, take the thread from the needle, wrap it around the screw that holds the presser foot onto the machine, open the bobbin case slide door, insert a fresh bobbin, and on the left hand side of the bobbin case there is a button with a bulls eye and/or an arrow, push that button down.

QuestionWhat is the Function of...
I have a Dressmaker Delux model s-4000. The machine runs great. But I don't have a manual and need to know the function of two nobs on either side of the zigzag width nob. Can you tell me the function of these nobs? Also, there is a three position switch that moves the needle from the left, center or right positions. Do you have answers for these questions or let me know where to find a manual?

QuestionCannot Get Cam/Seam Former Inserted Correctly
I just purchased a Viking 6030 and cannot seem to get the cam/seam former inserted correctly. I do have the book and it says that once I have it in place to push and turn until I feel it engage. I have the pattern selector on the dot like it says when changing the cam/seam former, but it will not turn or push in very far. When I try to sew I either get a straight stitch or zig zag only, not the decorative stitch I selected. Also the cam/seam former spins while sewing which leads me to believe that it is not in correctly. Can you please help.

Mary

AnswerDear Mary,

Look into the machine where you put the cam in. There will be a black round part- check to see if there is a crack in it, which there probably is. This is the zig zag cam stack gear. I do have that replacement part available for $32.50 with the part number being 4111595-0G. You could order this on www.sewingandvac.com. If you check out that part in your machine and find that there is no crack, e-mail me back and we will go from there.

QuestionProblems Embroidering a Polyester Double Layer Throw
I have a Singer Futura CE-200 Embroidery machine. I am having problems embroidering a polyester double layer throw. These are the throws that have been out in the stores for a while for traveling or kids. Just a light weight throw. I was trying to embroider on them and my thread keeps breaking. I have moved up from a #9 needle to a #11 needle, thinking that was the problem. Why would the thread be breaking?

Jeri
AnswerDear Jeri,

Does it break on any other material?

Sorry for the delay in responding. We were on vacation and failed to post the notice.

Thank You,
SewVac Doctor

RE:
No, just on the polyester throws. I used a tear away stabilizer behind it. I tried rethreading my needle several times and it still would break. A friend of mine said it was the throw material.

Jeri

RE:
Are you using a ball point needle? That is the only thing I can think of. Let me know.

Sorry for the delay in responding. We were on vacation and failed to post the notice.

QuestionNeed Help Sewing on Thin & Stretchy Fabrics
I need help sewing thin and or stretchy fabrics. Like bathingsuit fabric. Fabric bunches up and gets pulled into the machine through the hole the needle goes through. I am sure I have used the correct needle. I am thinking of buying a new machine, any suggestions? Thank you in advance for your answer...Karen
AnswerDear Karen

Use stabilizer on the bottom of the material called stitch-n-tear which will stablize the material and not allow the material to push through the eye of the needle.

QuestionHow Do You Re-Wind the Bobbin
How do you rewind the bobbin? and where can I get a book for my machine It is a singer touch & sew zig zag model 758
AnswerThread the machine as if you are starting to sew- presser foot in the up position, take the thread from the needle, wrap it around the screw that holds the presser foot onto the machine, open the bobbin case slide door, insert a fresh bobbin, and on the left hand side of the bobbin case there is a button with a bulls eye and/or an arrow, push that button to the right.

Part # SR-758. We have these available at www.sewingandvac.com for $16.95.

QuestionSews 3 or 4 Stitches, Then Misses
Dear Sir;

My kenmore model 1813 zig zag machine has started to sew 3 or 4 stiches then it misses 3 or 4 or more and the it will sew maybe an inch or 2??I am trying to sew on fleece material.

Hope you can help me on this.

Sincerely Gloria
AnswerDear Gloria,

Fleece is pretty thick, not very dense, though. I suggest using a size 16 needle, loosen the tension about 1 number on the top, and try to contain the fleece inside some stabilizer. Hope this helps.

QuestionDo I Need to Use a Special Needle??
Should I use a special needle to sew on vinyl ? I am using vinyl as a lining for cosmetic bag and sewing the vinyl to the quilted fabric. Someone suggested using tissue paper as well. Is that necessary ? Should the vinyl be placed on top of the fabric under the needle or under the fabric on the needleplate when sewing ?

Thank you.

Pat
AnswerDear Pat,

You would put the tissue paper between the needle plate and the material to keep it from slowing down haphazardly.

QuestionBobbin Winding-
I recently bought a singer sewing machine at a yard sale.
model# 6230 COULD YOU PLEASE EMAIL BOBBIN WINDING INSTRUCTIONS
to me ?
AnswerDear Kathy,

Thread the machine as if youre going to sew. Open up the bobbin door, insert a fresh bobbin, close the bobbin door until the arrow on the bed of the machine and the arrow on the slide plate meet. Then, with the upper thread underneath the foot and wrapped around the screw that holds the presser foot on, start the machine and the bobbin will start winding. When the bobbin is full, shut the slide plate and begin to sew. If you have a problem with your machine and this does not work, inspect the machine and respond to me with a description of what is happening and I will help you.

QuestionWinding the Bobbin on a Singer 1036
Hi
When I try to thread the bobbin on singer 1036 it keeps winding underneath the bobbin. I have the release set, the foot up, the thread looped on the side and the thing that holds the bobbini n pushed over to center. I have successfully wound it before. What is going on?

Thanks
Leslie
AnswerDear Leslie,

If you look at your bobbin case, you'll see a piece of metal that is near the number one on the bobbin case. It's probably pressed too tight against the plastic bobbin case. With a thin screw driver, wiggle it in between the metal piece and the plastic bobbin and separate it about the distance of a matchbook. This should fix your problem If you have any questions as to where this piece is located, do not hesitate to call me. Let me know how you make out.

QuestionWhat Should Tension Be Set To?
if you are wanting to sew a straight stitch on a sewing machine what number should the tension be set on?
thanks...

AnswerThe tension setting depends on the fabric and the needle and the thread. Most machines are set on 4 by the factory. Try that.

QuestionSewing Denim
I have a brother XL-5500 and was wondering, can it sew denim, and if so what do I need to do that. Do I need a special type of needle, or does a normal one work, I'm not trying to hem, it's only 2 pieces of denim, to make a purse.
Thanks,
Krystal
AnswerDear Krystal,

How thick is the denim? I would venture to say that you could sew the denim with a size 14 or 16 needle. It should not be any different from sewing any other material- have you had problems sewing through denim before?

AnswerDear Randy,

I do not know of any way to slow it down, other than replacing the motor entirely. As far as I know, that is just the way that the beast works. If you come accross a way to do so, I would love to hear. Good Luck!

QuestionClockwise or Counter Clockwise?
Singer 457, Stylist: Drop in bobbin. How do I drop it in, clockwise, counter clockwise. Does thread go into groove/opening. How do I thread the top thread through needle, front to back, left to right, etc. Thanks for help.
AnswerDear Judith,

You insert the bobbin with the thread coming off of the bobbin in a clockwise direction. You thread the needle front to back. If you would like to purchase an instruction manual for your machine, we have them available at www.sewingandvac.com It will be able to answer all questions like these that you have about your machine.

AnswerDear Lauren,

I am very sorry to tell you, but trying to get information from EuroPro has become an impossibility. We cannot even get parts for their machines. I would contact the person that you bought the machine from and maybe they could help you.

QuestionJanome Harmony 4052
I received this machine used with no manual. I cannot get the bobbin thread to catch into the needle. what am i doing wrong, thanks!
AnswerDear Ron,

You need to change the needle on the machine, making sure that the flat part of the needle is facing the hook. If this does not work, the machine may be out of time. You should do the following before taking it to a mechanic or sending it to us for a free estimate:

1. Change the needle
2. Clean out the bobbin and hook area completely
3. Re-thread the machine, making sure that the presser foot is in the up position when you thread the tension assembly

Hope this helps.

QuestionHow to Wind a Bobbin
I was recently given a Sears Kenmore #1310 Zig Zag machine. I have read and re-read the instruction manual on winding the bobbin but still am having no success. After threading per instructions I start the machine and the motor runs but there is nothing moving with regard to winding the bobbin. It seems to me that something should be moving in order to activate the winding process. I have followed the illustrations and written instructions but it seems something is missing.
I would really appreciate any help you can give me.

Thanks very much,

Jane
AnswerDear Jane,

There should be a way of moving the bobbin winder over to the right to engage the bobbin winder ring. This should make the mahcine wind the bobbin. If this does not work, or this part is frozen, then you will need to either buy a new bobbin winder assembly or have a mechanic re-build the bobbin winder mechanism.

QuestionCan My Elna Handle Marine Grade Vinyl?
Hello,

My wife has an Elna 2004 machine. I had problems over the winter with a raccoon in my boat. I need to make new seat cushons, and a Sunbrella cover. Can this machine handle marine grade vinyl and Subrella, or should I look at a different machine. Thanks for the help.

Jeff

AnswerDear Jeff,

I'm very sorry to tell you that this machine is not capable of handling what you want it to. You will need a portable upholstery machine to take the thicknesses that you are doing and also the fact that you will need to use 69 core thread, anti-rot, anti-sun, will make it impossible for your Elna to sew.

QuestionHow to Use a Blind Hem Foot
My wife has a Elna 2004SP. She would like to know how to use a Blind Hem foot. She can properly install the foot, select the proper stitch, but she's unable to keep the needle from penetrating all the way through the fabric when hemming up a pair of slacks.

Thank you for any information you can give her,

Jim
AnswerDear Jim,

There is no real instruction for this other than the mechanic use of the foot- which is given in the instruction manual that came with the machine. It really just takes practice to get it.

QuestionUsing Singer in France
I'm in the process of buying a new sewing machine, most likely the Singer Futura. However, I'm a fashion student living abroad (in Paris) for the year and I'm worried that I'll have issues with the voltage differences. Will I blow up the machines motor if I plug it through an adapter/converter into a European outlet? Is there a way to buy seperate plugs for France and the United States?

Thank you so much for your help,
Caitie
AnswerDear Caitie,

Any hardware store should have coverter sets to allow you to use the machine in France. It will not blow up the motor. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask.

QuestionCan My Machine Sew Hems?
Dear SewVac Doctor,

I just recieved a Necchi 544 Lydia 3 and have fiddled around with it and
would like to know if it would do a straight stitch and how to do this - ie
for hems etc. I don't want to buy a manual only to find out that this machine will not do
what I want. If it does this then I will buy the manual as there are lots of other
exciting features. But the one I want and need is to sew hems etc.

Pls answer soon.
Catharine

AnswerDear Catharine,

The Necchi 544 Lydia 3 is, in fact, capable of straight stitch hemming. There are two different types of hems- rolled hems and blindhems. For rolled hems, first you need to put the rolled hem foot on the machine (available optional accessory part # P60001), then make sure that you put the stitch width on zero or straight stitch and that should allow you to make a rolled hem. For blindhems, you just have to select the blindhem stitch on the selector and make sure that you have a medium width on your zig-zag. You may need help folding the material the proper way. That should do it. If you have any other questions, or would like to order the manual or any accessories, just let me know.

Thanks,
SewVac Doctor
